Islam by Alfred Guillaume
Alfred Guillaume (8 November 1888 – 30 November 1965) was a British Christian Arabist, scholar of the Hebrew Bible / Old Testament and Islam. He was best known as the author of Islam, published by Penguin Books. Guillaume's book "Islam" is a great brief synopsis of a deep religion. In turn he examines Muhammad, the Quran, and the evolution of Islam through schisms and the development of Islamic law & philosophy. Despite the fact this book is nearly 60 years old, it is still a good introduction to the world of Islam for the novice. Guillame does not really set out to describe the religious practices of Muslims, but rather to describe how Islam came to be historically, and how it has developed over time and its contrast with Christianity.
