The occultation of the twelfth Imam
“The Occultation of the Twelfth Imam” by Jassim Muhammad Hussain is a scholarly study on the doctrine of the Ghaybah (occultation) in Twelver Shi‘ism. The book examines the historical, theological, and political context of the disappearance of Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi, the twelfth Imam, in the 9th century. It explains the Minor Occultation (873–941 CE), during which the Imam communicated through deputies, and the Major Occultation, which continues until his awaited reappearance. Hussain analyzes Shi‘i sources, historical reports, and socio-political conditions of the Abbasid era, showing how the belief in the hidden Imam shaped Shi‘i identity, resilience, and political thought.
