Contrary to the terms of a treaty with Imam Hasan (AS), Muawiyah formally names his son Yazid as the heir to the caliphate. Muawiyah secures the pledge of allegiance for Yazid from a majority of the Muslims, apart from a few renowned personalities including Imam Husayn (AS). After Muawiya’s death, Yazid sends a letter to his governor in Medina, ordering him to take pledge of allegiance from Imam Husayn without delay. The Imam refuses and says “I bid my final farewell to an Islam that has become afflicted by a ruler such as Yazid. I have heard my grandfather (the Prophet) say that the caliphate is forbidden for the sons of Abu Sufyan.” The next day, the Imam leaves for Mecca.
